Engagement Sessions and What to Wear

One of the most common questions I get from brides is "What should we wear" in our engagement pictures"? Honestly it is a little bit more involved than just your outfits. It is where you decide to shoot, are you bringing any props, what feeling are you trying to portray from this session. Obviously if your home has a distinct feel don't do something that is so off the wall you won't want to hang the pictures up when you get them back. I am a fan of the dressier the better. Rent a formal gown from Rent the Runway or buy one. Put your future groom in a nice suit or tuxedo. Decide how you want to add texture and dimension to your shoot...will he have a fun printed tie or will you wear a fun statement piece of jewelry? Definitely choose something though to bring interest to the photos. Another fun way to add uniqueness and contrast is to bring in a bouquet of flowers or a special prop. I also ALWAYS recommend having the make up artist you choose for your wedding to do your makeup for these pictures. It lets you guys get comfortable with each other prior to the big day. Plus I don't care what anyone says there is nothing like having your make up done by a professional to help with your confidence while taking the pictures!!!

I have included engagement pictures from a few brides this past year that all have quite a different look. Their each unique to the couple, but stunning. The amazing art museum ones by Jonnie and Garrett in formal wear have an incredible modern simple feel. That mainly comes from location, but her stark red gown is the perfect WOW factor.

The 2 desert sessions by Daniel Kim have amazing landscape views along with really nice outfits. The contrast of formal wear in the desert is a personal favorite of mine for sure. You will also notice one bride is wearing a flower crown that adds a ton of texture and depth.

Do you and your fiancè frequent coffee shops or the bar??? Why not get some pictures of you guys interacting in your favorite location?!? Vienna Glenn always gets some of the best life style shots like the one below of my couple literally taking shots at the bar! How fun is that?!?

The last couple by Amy & Jordan brought in a bike, blanket, & Starbucks cups to pose with because that was meaningful to them, but do you see how much was added just from the flannel blanket?

I hope this helps give you a head start on planning your session. Let me know if you have any questions!
